To choose well what clothes to wear for snow. The secret is to know the properties of the materials and to wear a minimum of three layers. The challenge: not to be cold but, at the same time, have enough mobility to enjoy an unforgettable getaway fully. Follow the following steps, and you will see that preparing to go to the snow for the first time is much easier than you thought. Thus, you can enjoy skiing or snowboarding with all the necessary equipment.
Clothes to go to the snow: layered
Experts advise putting on three layers of clothing:
- The first attached to the body to get warm. The meshes and thermal shirts (long sleeve) fulfill that function very well.
- The second, waterproof so as not to get wet.
- And a third that also helps stop the wind and that we can take it off in case of feeling hot.
If the quality of the garments is good, it will be light and not too thick, which will improve our agility on the track and prevent us from getting tired too soon.
As for the materials, it is important not to use cotton garments as they get wet quickly with sweat or snow water and, instead, take time to dry. The best are synthetic garments that facilitate perspiration.
At the bottom, the ideal is ski pants or a jumpsuit. For the little ones, the jumpsuit is easier to adjust and more practical. Some wear gloves or mittens, so they don’t get lost. For you and older children, ski pants combined with a good anorak (the third layer) is the best option. Also, the anorak, one of the most expensive pieces, can be used on other occasions in addition to skiing and amortize its price.
Packing: How to dress in the snow
Even the most skilled skiers can forget to pack some of the essentials to go to the snow. Make sure you have everything you want to dress like a pro and enjoy the snow:
- Boots to go to the snow, non-slip, waterproof, and high above the ankle to prevent snow from entering. They are usually called apre-ski boots. If you choose the ones that look more like hiking boots, they can be very useful for excursions or for colder days.
- Socks. At least two pairs to have a spare.
- Waterproof gloves. Some put two, thin ones underneath and thicker ones to avoid catching a cold.
- Sunglasses, special for snow that is usually a little larger than usual and more resistant to shocks and falls. Make sure they have approved ski goggles.
- Sun cream and lip balm. A minimum of 50% protection for the entire face and remember to reapply every two hours, at least.
- Cap and a handkerchief to cover two of the body parts that were previously cooled: the head and neck.
- Small backpack with water and energy bars, plus some money if you want to go to the bar for a few minutes to rest and gain strength to continue skiing.
- Helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads, most snow injuries could have been avoided, which is that, especially for first-timers, prevention is better than cure.
- Clothes to be off track, to go to dinner, party, or rest at the hotel.
Remember to add spare clothes if you are going to be more than a day in the snow. With waterproof pants and a jacket, it will be enough, but add more inner shirts and socks than you think you need.
Cheap snow clothing
If you do not have a team to go to the snow and nobody can leave you one. The cheapest thing is that you buy a shirt and thermal tights (they are not expensive, and you can also use them on the coldest days) and look for waterproof clothes. Falling into the error of going to the snow with jeans and tennis shoes can cost you a severe cold. In addition to ruining the exit since the water will enter you everywhere, and there will be no way for you to dry yourself.
The most expensive of all the equipment to go to the snow are the boots, but you can rent them for days. Find out about the different prices offered at your destination and reserve the rental in advance to avoid unwanted unforeseen events.
No snow injuries: travel safely
Just as runners in a marathon usually prepare months before for the big day, skiing requires significant prior muscle preparation to avoid over-strain injuries.
If you do not exercise regularly, try to alternate during practical days of aerobic type (such as running, swimming, cycling, etc.) and anaerobic (stretching, jumping, weights…).
